C.M. Russell Wild Life Refuge

We offer a one day float on the C. M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge from James Kipp Recreation Area to the Rock Creek boat ramp. This is a 12 mile float on the refuge’s Upper Missouri River. This float is filled with a variety of scenery, from views of forested coulees, to the badlands that the breaks are famous for. This float will take you through some of the best wildlife habitat on the refuge. The legendary wildlife populations on the refuge include 236 species of birds, black-footed ferrets & black-tailed prairie dogs. We also float through the Sipery Ann Elk Refuge, known for it’s fantastic elk viewing. You will see homesteads and learn about the history of the area in a personal way. The drive alone, through the river breaks, makes this a worthwhile trip.

The trip starts at 9:00 a.m., with brunch at the James Kipp Campground. James Kipp Campground is located 70 miles northeast of Lewistown and is at the eastern end of the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. We should be off the river about 5:00 p.m. At the end of the float we will provide you with a satisfying meal & send you on your way.

The price of this trips is $80 for adults & $50 for children twelve years of age and younger. This includes brunch, the evening meal and a vehicle shuttle from James Kipp. Call for group rates.

C. M. Russell Wild Life Refuge

In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an order that initially established this area as the “Fort Peck Game Range”. The Cowboy Artist, Charles M. Russell, visited these lands in the 1880’s. His paintings and sculptures capture for all time the beauty and drama of the land, the wild animals and the cowboy life of Montana. In 1963 the game range was designated the “Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Range” in honor of C. M. Russell. In 1976 the “Range” became a “Refuge” You can also see the same lands visited and painted by Russell on our “C. M. Russell Wild Life Refuge” adventure.
