C.M. Russell on the Missouri

We offer a one-day float from Judith Landing to Stafford/McClelland Ferry. This 12 mile float on the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument will take you on a less crowded section of the river, with some of the wildest and most beautiful country in the West. This float is filled with a variety of scenery, from fantastic views of forested coulees, broad mesas, deep river canyons, to river bottoms with legendary wildlife populations. Some of the historic sites we will see on this this adventure include the P. N. Ranch (1884), Fort Clagett (1867), Camp Cooke (1866), Council Island, location of the Blackfeet-Flathead Treaty of 1846 set up by Jesuit Fathers Pierre Jean DeSmet & Nicholas Point, the Stevens Treaty of 1855 set up by Isaac Stevens, Governor of Washington Territory, Fort Chardon, (1844), the Lewis & Clark campsite of May 28,1805, the Karl Bodmer & Price Maximilian campsites of August 4, 1833 & August 3, 1833, the Iron City indian fight of 1866, the Murray Woodhawk dugout, the Hagadone Homestead (1917), Sugar Loaf Rock, the Jack McClelland Homestead (1906), and the Stafford/ McClelland Ferry (1920). The drive alone, through the river breaks, makes this a worthwhile trip and you can also get a ride on the historic Stafford /McClelland Ferry.

The trip starts at 9:00 a.m., with a brunch at the Winifred Cafe. Winifred is located 38 miles north of Lewistown and is the southern door of the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. We will leave for the river at 10:00 a.m. and should be off the river about 5:00 p.m. We will end the trip with a meal at the Winifred Cafe.

The price of this trip is $80 for adults & $50 for children twelve years old and younger. This includes both meals and a vehicle shuttle from Winifred. Call for group rates.
